The internet is
forever preaching to us what is right and what is wrong when it comes to
beauty, yet when put against scientific evidence many of these ‘hacks’ are
proven to be a load of fluff. I've debunked 5 common beauty myths that you need to
know about right now.
1. Only dry skin types should use moisturiser
Many women with oily skin believe that they
shouldn’t use a moisturiser as this will only make the oil worse and leave them
with greasy, shiny skin. This is in fact not true, using a moisturiser daily is
imperative for all skin types to ensure your skin stays supple, hydrated and
works in preventing wrinkles. If you do suffer with oily skin there are many
things you can do without dropping moisturiser altogether, many brands offer mattifying
gel based moisturisers which cater to oily skin, leaving your complexion fresh
and glowing without the greasy residue.
2. Toothpaste gets rid of spots
We’ve all done it, noticed a massive zit on
our forehead and reached for the Colgate, but this age old hack is definitely
not the way to rid of a spot. Yes toothpaste uses a drying formula which means
it kills the spot, right? Wrong, using toothpaste will inflame the area and get
under the skin promoting further infection, it is much more effective to buy
spot cream or keep the area clean to prevent further outbreaks.

3. Makeup will last for years
Much like food, makeup too has an
expiration date, each product varies but most of them have a shelf life of about
6-12 months. It’s a good idea to have a makeup clear-out every once in a while
to make sure you aren’t using out of date makeup as this can be detrimental to
your skin and eye health.
4. Drinking water cures dry skin
It’s no secret that drinking 8 glasses of
water a day does wonders to the look of your skin leaving it fresh, hydrated and
glowing, but there is no specific evidence that suggests it cures dry skin. Yes
it hydrates, but if you suffer with pretty bad dry skin you really should
invest in a good beauty regime to tackle the dryness, such as using a facial
oil and heavy duty moisturiser.
5. Shaving hair makes it grow back thicker
There is no evidence that supports the
argument that hair grows back thicker after shaving, however it may appear
thicker because of the blunt ends that are caused from the harsh effects of
shaving. These ends can seem more noticeable as they grow back as stubble.
