When it
comes to skincare, having a regular routine of maintenance is key to ensuring
our complexion remains healthy and youthful, whilst also keeping wrinkles at
bay. But what happens when it reacts to elements we
have little control over?
Pollution,
hormonal changes and even the amount
of pressure that
everyday life brings can cause our skin to age
prematurely as well as promoting skin issues such as acne and redness. Adult Acne affects many women in the UK and around the world, the
likes of Kendall Jenner and Lorde
have recently spoken out with regards to their experience with adult acne. For many women,
Acne is a skin condition that occurs in their
20’s, 30’s and 40’s as oppose to just their teenage years.
Here are a few things you can do to try and combat the skin condition:
1. Adjust your diet
The
first thing you should do if you are suffering with adult acne is take a look
at your diet and try to pinpoint the problem. Are you eating a lot of dairy?
Consuming fizzy drinks and not enough water? Try to eat foods that are
anti-oxidant based such as Blueberries, Acai berries as well as foods that are
a source of good fatty acids such as avocados. A few other key
nutrients that you should try and include in your daily diet are Vitamin A,
Zinc, Probiotics & Omega 3, these all provide varying benefits to your skin
and overall diet, but all help to keep your skin youthful and plump.
2. De-stress
your life
Stress can
be a huge factor towards bad skin health. If you are stressed whether it’s at
home or at work, you may want to try and make some changes to make your life a
little easier. In
today’s fast-paced environment it’s easy to swept away with being busy 24/7 and
wanting to do as much as we can, however this can have a detrimental effect on
our skin. The best thing to do is to cut down your time spent in the office. If
you work a 9-5 job but are staying late every night, this is not going to be
good for your mental wellbeing, and in turn damaging your skin health. Try to
free up some time in your week for some self-care such as having a bubble bath,
taking a yoga class or even going for a walk outside to ease the stress off.
3. Know your ingredients
Having a rigorous and regular
skincare regime is key to maintaining your skins health and balance. And
knowing what ingredients to use on your skin makes all the difference,
Salicylic acid is a fantastic acne treatment. It's also called a beta-hydroxy
acid. Salicylic works by exfoliating gently to unclog pores and Benzoyl
peroxide works by killing the acne bacteria, while exfoliating the pores at the
same time. Other acid-based ingredients to look out for are Glycolic acid for
exfoliation and Retinol for its collagen-building properties.
4. Natural Exfoliation is key
Exfoliation is one of the most
important things you can do to fight acne in both prevention and treatment.
Exfoliation is so important as it gently gets rid of any dead skin cells and
excess oil that can promote acne. Try to use a subtler type of exfoliation or a
natural exfoliant. A few natural ingredients you could use to make your own
exfoliator could be baking soda, sugar, sea salt, honey and oats.
5. Up the vitamins and minerals
Taking daily supplements can be an easy yet beneficial way clear
your skin, and there are many you can choose from. A few supplements
to try to see if they make a difference to your complexion would be Vitamin C,
Vitamin A, Vitamin B complex, Zinc and magnesium. These can all be bought from
health stores and are a simple yet effective way to try and combat the
condition.
